He is the patron saint of dogs, invalids, wrongly accused individuals, bachelors, and a variety of other things. When his parents died when he was twenty years old, he bequeathed his estate to the needy, delegated city government to his uncle, and embarked on a new life as a penniless mendicant pilgrim. Roch was a devout Catholic as a child, fasting twice a week after his pious mother’s example. Roch was born with a unique and deep red cross-shaped mark on his chest, a sign that the Blessed Virgin Mary had heard and answered his mother’s prayers for the healing of her barrenness. Rocco, was a nobleman from Montpellier, France, and the only son of the city’s wealthy governor. Roch is the patron saint of Italy, dogs, dog owners, knee issues, surgeons, invalids, bachelors, diseased cattle, cholera, plague, skin rashes and infections, communicable diseases, pestilence, and epidemics, among other things.
